I was genuinely sad to leave Nova Scotia and P.E.I. We had so many wonderful experiences and a lot of laughs. I took lots of photos out of the car window as we blasted along and got enough to be useable. The fields of canola in full bloom looked magnificent and we couldn't resist getting out to play.
Joyce has had a few major life scares in her life and she is determined to live every day and to see the best in the world and in others. She is indomitable, irrepressible and full of Joie de Vivre. She was great company as were all of the others.
The trip to the Hopewell Rocks in The a bay of Fundy was another gotta do it experience. I'd seen them in pictures and knew that this is the place that has the highest tidal variation in the world. It changes by about 50 ft at high tide. It's all controlled by park rangers and it costs to get in but was worth it. It has been so hot and muggy so I was glad to get the little buggy ride down and up rather than walk the paths. We made it with 35 minutes to spare before they clear the area. Not a place you would want to be trapped by high tide as the cliffs are very high.
The water is a muddy reddish colour from the mud and rocks that are rich in iron oxide. The local river is the Chocolate River. If only! It's also a euphemism for dirty water.
We stopped at a little cafe owned by three maiden sisters, one of whom is an ex colleague of Jane. It was very sweet and they have a very distinct accent and lilt. It is distinctly Albert County. The cafe was in Hillsborough, quite close to the Hopewell Rocks. They made a superb cup of tea orange pekoe which is just plain tea, although they expect to drink it black.
The architecture of the churches and homes will be my fondest memories apart from: Anne of Green Gables, Peggy's Cove lighthouse, the lighthouses everywhere, fields of potatoes, corn, canola and baled hay; the old fishing boats, the thunderstorm and the laughs. I am indeed very blessed.
I have shouted in every place, I'm in PEI, I'm in Nova Scotia etc. no one takes a blind bit of notice. Jane, Marian and Joyce are mortified but I see that as their problem. Lol.
ITS VERY HOT AND MUGGY AGAIN TODAY. I'm aiming to get my hair cut tomorrow and if that goes badly I will be in full headscarf.
As we left the area Jane stopped at a bakery famous for its sticky buns. "What shall I do with my sticky bun?" Legend has it that these are the best sticky buns in the world. Cows ice cream also claims to be the best ice cream in the world. I admit they have a range of flavours that we do not get in NZ but it is like our brands in taste and texture and I'm not even an ice cream fan in particular. Sea salt and caramel is nice but there's no way I could eat the measures they dish up. Kiddies size for me and even that stonkers you. They do it big in the Maritimes. I do like the Cows merchandise though. Couldn't buy any because I have no spare room in the suitcase.
So a trip that takes a few hours took us 8 hours because we stopped regularly to look, take photos, eat, look some more, have a look in tourist stores and generally muck about. So be it. I have a week here and then onto Milwaukee. Poor people who are hosting me. Maybe they see it as their service to God.
